Calcutta HC expresses displeasure over Enforcement Directorate's report in corruption case

The Calcutta High Court has voiced its dissatisfaction with the report submitted by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) in a corruption case related to municipal corporation recruitment. Judge Amrita Sinha expressed her disappointment, stating that the report lacked new information and failed to demonstrate progress in the investigation.

During the court proceedings on Friday, Judge Amrita Sinha questioned the content of the ED report, remarking that it failed to provide any substantial updates. She noted that the steps mentioned in the report were already in line with earlier court orders, leaving her uncertain about any fresh developments. Judge Sinha further raised concerns about the sluggish pace of the investigation, questioning the reason behind its slow progress.

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), another central investigation agency involved in the case, was unable to submit its report to the court on Friday and requested additional time.

In response to the unsatisfactory report from the ED, the Calcutta High Court directed both the ED and the CBI to submit comprehensive reports in the next hearing. The ED had presented its report in the form of a cover letter to Justice Sinha on Friday, which did not meet the court's expectations.

During the proceedings, the ED's lawyer argued that the primary investigation in the case was being carried out by the CBI, and the ED's actions were contingent on the progress made by the CBI.

The lawyer representing the CBI assured the court that the investigation report was prepared and ready for submission but would require a few additional days before it could be presented.
